"Karuni" means cotton in the Tarasco dialect of Michoacan, place where most of our items come from. Founded 27 years ago, the CIMAT is one of Mexico’s most important research centers. The constant search to achieve a balance between basic and applied mathematics, combined with the work of liaison and technological transfer with the productive and social sectors, accord a very special nature to the CIMAT.

CIMAT possesses high-level academic personnel (over 80% of CIMAT researchers belong to the National Investigators System and more than 93% hold a doctorate), engaged in frontier research activities, the formation of human resources at degree and post-degree level, and liaison with the social and productive areas. Academically speaking, the Center is organized into three areas: Basic Mathematics, Probability and Statistics and the Computer Sciences.
